Marijuana vs Tobacco Research Paper

Marijuana vs Tobacco Research Paper

About 50 percent of 12th graders have admitted to using marijuana. And about 40 percent of them smoke it on a regular basis. The question is why is marijuana illegal and tobacco legal? Marijuana has been known as a “gateway drug”, meaning it leads to use of other harder drugs. This is not true. It truly depends on the person whether they are going to do other drugs. People who smoke marijuana do not have a higher chance of getting addicted or even trying cocaine or heroin than non-users. Many negative facts have been told of marijuana, mostly by the tobacco industry, which are false. Why is the tobacco industry so concerned with marijuana and its negative effects? It is because the tobacco industry is trying to take some of the attention off of their product and point the finger at marijuana. Marijuana is healthier, safer, and has more medical use than tobacco does.

Lolita Written by Vladimir Nabokov: A Product of Modernism

Lolita Written by Vladimir Nabokov: A Product of Modernism

As a more logical, scientific mindset is being developed in North American culture, it has become increasingly common for individuals to look for the simplest, cause-and-effect version of reality. Modernism, however, as a literary movement, rejects this notion, believing rather that reality is “layered, allusive,” and much more complex than is often assumed (Lye). Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov, provides this presentation of reality, along with many other qualities of a Modernist work of fiction, beautifully. This is why Lolita should be considered representative of Modernist literature, with the most prominent features that demonstrate this being the narration, a heavy focus on Impressionism, and its confrontational nature.

Basic Counselling Skills and Their Usefulness - Empathy, Acceptance, Warmth and Genuineness

Basic Counselling Skills and Their Usefulness - Empathy, Acceptance, Warmth and Genuineness

This essay explains the three essential qualities needed to become a good counsellor. The first part looks at Empathy, the second part Acceptance and Warmth (unconditional positive regard) and finally Genuineness (Congruence ).

Carl Rogers suggests that these three basic qualities are needed for a helping relationship to be successful. He also suggests that the counsellor’s skill to communicate these qualities would be sufficient in deciding if a helping relationship would have a positive outcome.

I will now examine each of these qualities:

EMPATHY
One dictionary definition explains empathy as ‘the power or state of imagining oneself to be another person and so of sharing his/her ideas and feelings’ ( Longman’s Dictionary ). But Carl Rogers gives a more precise definition. Empathy, according to Rogers is the ability to experience another person’s world as if it were one’s own without ever losing that ‘as if’ quality.

Kabbalah and Humanistic Psychology: A Search for the Human Potential

Kabbalah and Humanistic Psychology: A Search for the Human Potential

Between the 9th and the 15th century, Jewish philosophy was mostly concerned with inquiries of the nature of the human soul. Following the occupation of Constantinople in the East by the Muslims, scripts of ancient Greek philosophies had been translated and rediscovered, which brought about a great interest to Judaism. Judaic tradition incorporates many ideas from Greek philosophical teachings, especially Aristotelian and Platonist philosophy, making it a rather theological area of study (Samuelson, 2009). Its beginning was marked by two notable rabbis, which started deconstructing the meaning of life, beyond what was then known as dedicating life to the devotion of God. The first rabbi to incorporate these philosophical debates, Aristotelian in particular, was Saadia Ben Joseph Gaon. To his interpretation “The soul is… not a substance but something attached to a substance in the way that colour, sound, number, and so forth is attached to a body; the soul is external and internal”

Essay on Belonging Using William Shakespeare's Play As You Like It and the Television Series Seachange as Examples

The behaviour in which one individual interacts with others and the world around them can enhance or restrain their experience of belonging. A sense of belonging is reliant on relationships and close links with places, particular environments and landscapes. Relationships are initially built upon mutual interests and acceptance and this is closely linked with one’s innate desire to be able to affiliate with a group or another individual. Belonging is a part of everyday life and can enrich our identity and can lead to acceptance and understanding. In Shakespeare’s play ‘As You Like It’ and the first three episodes of the TV series ‘Seachange’ the protagonists experience a wide range of belonging and not belonging not only to person but also to place. This is observed throughout the wide use of juxtaposition of settings, country life versus city life, dramatic irony, and satire to express the characters feelings and to involve the responder.

Guidelines and Feedback on How to Write a Good Essay

Guidelines and Feedback on How to Write a Good Essay

1. Read the Question very Carefully
Do not begin work on an assignment before you are sure that you understand the question. If there are any words you do not know, refer to the dictionary.

2. Plan your Essay Carefully
You cannot hope to write an organized essay unless you have planned it in advance. A properly planned essay should contain introduction, main body and conclusion. All three parts are essential. If any of them is missing, the quality of your paper declines.

An introduction should set out the problem and how you intend to answer it. In your introduction, you should:
a) define key terms
b) define what you will do and how you will go about answering the question

The main body of your assignment should be a thorough examination of the question with the purpose of convincing readers that your arguments are sound. Your discussion, therefore, should always be backed up by a careful selection of historical data (statistics, quotes, figures etc.). Please remember:
a) each paragraph should be built around one central idea

Comparing and Contrasting the Poems Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town Written By E. E. Cummings and Romeo and Juliet Written By William Shakespeare

Comparing and Contrasting the Poems Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town Written By E. E. Cummings and Romeo and Juliet Written By William Shakespeare

Throughout time love has conquered all, in these two stories love is the cause of death and despair, but in the end love is the reason for two couples to prove that without love there is no life. “Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town” is a poem about two lovers that have been made outcast by their town from unacceptable social joining in their union. On the other hand, “Romeo and Juliet” are of the same category but it is not only the town but their families are repulsed by the thought of their affair. Two tales of forbidden love, one rejected by family the other ignored by the town’s people, both brought together by tragedy only to remain side by side in their deaths.

Paper on the Documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore

Paper on the Documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore

“Fahrenheit 9/11”, a documentary by Michael Moore, was an attempt to give people a graphic and horrifying look at the war on terror. It was mainly a thinly disguised anti-Bush campaign and an aid in the growing push to expel the President and his administration. Although Moore has remained neutral with his views, much of the footage in the documentary was more liberal at making people sympathize with those greatly affected by the war. Its title is a play on Ray Bradbury’s acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 which is about a future totalitarian state where reading, and thus independent thinking, has been outlawed. “Fahrenheit 451” takes its title from the temperature at which books burn. Moore has called "Fahrenheit 9/11” the "temperature at which freedom burns."

Book Review on Hills Like White Elephants Written by Ernest Hemingway

Book Review on Hills Like White Elephants Written by Ernest Hemingway

Without reading the story, what do you think the story is about just by looking at the title? Before I read this story, my eight-year old daughter saw the title, and she wanted me to read this for her because she thought it was about white elephants. I also thought about reading the story for my children. When I looked at the title, I had imagined white elephants, having escaped from a zoo, went up a hill and to live freely. Before Professor Hansen taught us about the symbolism that hills and white elephants represented, I totally misunderstood about this story. They were symbolism of pregnancy and unwanted gift (to express for main characters’ mind)

Surviving to Succeed in the Sky

Surviving to Succeed in the Sky

Since the first plane flight in 1903, air travel has become an essential part of life for more and more people. As a result globalization, there are now about 1.6 billion passengers every year. For them, it is important to be able to enjoy the comfort of cabin, “their temporary home for the duration of the flight” (Hedge). Aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus have long noticed the significance of personal comfort during air traveling and have been trying to accommodate this growing demand. Nevertheless, complaints remain as common as before and a long-haul flight in economy class is still said to be “like an endurance contest” (Gilden). The problem is that although many designs have been made to improve the harsh situation, they are often not adopted by airlines because new aircraft and equipment are mostly far from being affordable. To more or less fill the gap between cost and comfort, I will in what following discuss a few cheaper and simpler designs aimed to improve the economy class cabin on long distance flight.

Charles Farquharson's Plantation: Helping to Create a Socio-Economic Situation Where Slaves Maintained Their Own Group Identity

“We would all agree that insofar as every landscape is a composition of spaces it is also a composition of boundaries.” (Jackson 1984:13) Few things establish a boundary quite as well as a wall; although a wall may be built for a variety of reasons its essential nature is to delineate space and this delineation can have a social impact whether or not it is intended. The Farquharson plantation provides a unique landscape for understanding the socio-economic aspects of walls as boundaries, both because it is a plantation and, as such, is a small community steeped in social and economic inequality where clear social boundaries between master and slave exist while the people live in relatively close proximity, and because it is in itself unique among plantations of the Caribbean and elsewhere.

Issues With Binge Drinking in Colleges

Issues With Binge Drinking in Colleges

Nowadays, binge drinking is widespread in colleges. According to the National Survey of Students at 140 Campuses carried out in 1993, about 44% of L college students were binge drinkers, including 19% frequent binge drinkers (who binged three or more times in the past two weeks) and 25% of L infrequent drinkers (who binged one or two times in the past two weeks). It goes without saying that binge drinking is now bringing problems to the daily life in colleges. The most evident one is that binge drinking may lead to serious consequences in the drinkers’ health. Moreover, binge drinking can negatively affect the drinkers’ academic lives in college. Last, binge drinking can pose dangers for the non-binge drinkers on campus as well. Thus, as binge drinking influences college students’ lives in negative ways, in my opinion it is better to forbid binge drinking.

Looking Through Prophetic Eyes

Looking Through Prophetic Eyes

Prophecy- The function or vocation of a prophet; specifically: the inspired declaration of divine will and purpose. (Webster, 2011)
Prophet- One who utters divinely inspired revelations: as an often capitalized: the write of one of the prophetic books of the Bible. (Webster, 2011)

Is it possible for a man/woman to obtain the gift of prophecy? For many people with religious backgrounds, prophecy can be viewed as spiritual messages or conformation derived from God. While others who are not religious, view this as a metaphysical empowerment. The history of prophecy goes far back into time. During the biblical days prophets were not just fortune tellers, but men and woman who had a divine message from the Lord to give to his people. Throughout time, man has always sought various ways to predicting the future. There are several examples in the Bible in which prophets of the Old Testament predicted future events. Being a young woman of Christian faith, I find it unfortunate that there are people in this world who put their faith in psychics and other false prophets, instead of the all-knowing, loving God, Jesus Christ.

Linguistic Globalization

Linguistic Globalization

Terms such as globalization, free trade, capital flow and so-called single world culture are frequently used in our contemporary society and raise controversial issues. Economically, most countries benefit significantly from the implementation of a single trade market, but culturally; we might be in danger of losing our individuality as a nation. If this is what the future holds and if this is the right approach, it is possible that mankind is missing something.
